Aversive Conditioning

Since humans subconsciously wish to deny the superiority of dogs, they often become angry, defensive, or sulky when this truth is driven home. Therefore, actions that explicitly demonstrate your dominance, such as growling or nipping, should be avoided in all but the most severe cases. Keep in mind that selecting the right technique is as much art as science, since so much depends on the personal and emotional traits of your human. But serious biting, however much deserved, is never recommended.

Barking is highly effective, but must be used judiciously. People have poor hearing overall, but extreme sensitivity to the particular sound frequency of canine barking is bred into them. It takes only a few barks to get them to let you outside, follow you, etc.9
